That&#8217;s why horse lovers sometimes call the animal <strong>Ari\u00e9geois<\/strong>. The earliest traces of the M\u00e9rens go back to prehistoric rock drawings in the <strong>cave of Niaux<\/strong> near <strong>Tarascon<\/strong>. Many centuries later, <strong>Charlemagne<\/strong> and <strong>Napoleon<\/strong> used the mountain horse for their armies because of its <strong>strength<\/strong> and <strong>courage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The horse owes its <strong>pure-bred<\/strong> survival to some <strong>passionate breeders<\/strong>, who continued to breed in the <strong>traditional way<\/strong>: by <strong>grazing<\/strong> in the mountains. Thanks to their efforts, the first <strong>M\u00e9rens studbook<\/strong> in the world was founded in <strong>1947<\/strong>. This guaranteed the <strong>survival<\/strong> of the breed.
